iPhone Not Charging? Safe Checks Before Repair
A phone that will not charge may have a faulty cable, power adapter, outlet, or debris in its charging port.
Follow these steps in order, stopping when the issue is fixed. Menu names may vary by model and software version.
Try a known-good power source
Plug into a different wall outlet with a compatible charger and cable. Avoid damaged or frayed charging accessories.
Give it time
If the battery is fully depleted, leave the phone connected for 20–30 minutes before expecting the screen to respond.
Inspect the port without tools
Look for obvious lint or damage using good lighting. Do not insert metal objects or liquids into the charging port.
Restart if possible
If the iPhone powers on, restart it and check for an iOS update. Try another compatible cable to isolate an accessory problem.
Check for heat or liquid warnings
If the phone warns that liquid is detected, disconnect the cable and follow Apple’s drying guidance. Do not use heat or rice.
Get service if needed
If multiple known-good chargers fail, or the port appears damaged, contact Apple or a reputable repair provider.
Helpful tip
If the battery is swollen or the phone is excessively hot, stop using and charging it until it can be assessed safely.
