TV Has Picture but No Sound? Easy Troubleshooting
When a TV shows video without sound, the cause may be mute, an incorrect output device, a connected soundbar, or a particular app.
Follow these steps in order, stopping when the issue is fixed. Menu names may vary by model and software version.
Check mute and volume
Press mute once and raise the volume. Check the volume on a connected cable box or streaming stick as well.
Try another channel or app
Play a different program. If only one app is silent, restart or update that app rather than changing the TV’s global settings.
Check audio output settings
Open the TV sound settings and confirm the selected output matches your setup: TV speakers, soundbar, Bluetooth headphones, or receiver.
Inspect external connections
If you use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical audio, ensure cables are secure and that the soundbar or receiver is on the correct input.
Restart and test built-in speakers
Restart the TV and audio equipment. Temporarily switch to TV speakers to determine whether the external audio device is responsible.
Helpful tip
If sound is missing only on one HDMI input, test another cable or source device before replacing the TV.
